Course Aims
- To provide students with experience of a variety of Art and Design topics introduced to them in the form of projects
- To ensure that having carried out the project work the students
have a body of work in their portfolios which can be used at interview
for a future course
Course Content
This option provides a general art and design mix suitable for
portfolio preparation or general interest and enjoyment. Students will
be given an introduction to various art and design subjects. A
different subject will be covered every 2 or 4 weeks. Examples of
subjects covered include: drawing, lino block printing, surfaces,
printing, typography, graphic design and fashion.
The programme consists of practical work in the studio, group work
and visits to museums and galleries in order to gather research work
for students' projects. The emphasis of the course is on creativity,
learning to express ideas on paper and also making in three dimensions.
The programme changes regularly to provide a broadranging programme with something for everyone.
If you are preparing a portfolio we recommend taking 24 weeks of English Plus Art & Design.
Please note that computers are not used in this programme.
Sample Course
Students might cover the following areas:
- Drawing: Working from observation, learning how to represent form, tone, space, experimenting with mark making using different media
- Mixed Media: Museum Research (sketch books), the
visual research will be used for the project and will be interpreted
using collage, drawing, painting and monoprints. - Fashion: Fashion Drawing, working from the life
model. Museum research (sketch books), the visual research will be
developed into design ideas for a hat prototype which will then be
constructed using basic materials in the studio. - Graphic Design: Logo project involving the
re-design of the logo for a high street retail company and production
of ideas for packaging, bags etc. - Painting: Colour theory, colour mixing, paint techniques using acrylics, working from the studio still life set up
At the end of the course students will:
- have an insight to the field of Art and Design
- an understanding of how to express their ideas in both two and three dimensions
- have an appreciation of work methods and processes
What is included?
- 15 hours of General English tuition per week, Monday to Friday 09.00 - 12.20
- Normally 7 hours of college options over 2 afternoons per week

Materials etc.
Basic
materials will be provided, students are expected to bring their own
pencils, brushes, sketch book, scissors and craft knife, and a camera
for recording three dimensional work and visual research.
How many students in a class?
For English language, average 10 students, maximum 12.
For college option, average 8 students, maximum 16.
What is the minimum age?
16.
Do I need to have experience in the subject I want to study?
No. These courses are available to all students irrelevant of their previous art and design experience.
Level of English required?
Elementary or above.
